BAY MINETTE – Baldwin County voters turned out in high numbers to cast ballots in the Nov. 3 general election with an overall turnout of almost 62 percent.

A total of 109,276 ballots were cast, 61.85 percent of the 176,666 registered voters, according to complete, but unofficial election reports. The totals do not include provisional ballots, which will be certified Tuesday.

The turnout percentage was higher in the 2016 general election, 65.13 percent, but fewer votes were cast. In 2016, 95,627 votes were cast in Baldwin County, but the number of registered voters was 146,821, according to election reports.

Republican candidates received the majority of the vote in the 2020 general election with 56,814 voters casting a straight GOP ticket. On the Democrat side, 13,257 voted a straight ticket.

President Donald Trump received 83,055 votes, while Democratic challenger Joe Biden received 24,344.

Republican challenger for the U.S. Senate Tommy Tuberville received 79,737 votes to incumbent Democrat Doug Jones’ 28,656. Tuberville won the statewide election.

In the race for U.S. House of Representatives District 1, Republican Jerry Carl received 83,469 votes to Democrat James Averheart’s 24,095. Carl won the overall election for the district.

Baldwin voters approved three of the four local amendments on the ballot.

Amendment 2, which would allow the county to create a toll authority to pay the cost of extending the Baldwin Beach Express from Interstate 10 to Interstate 65 failed by a vote of 54,744 against to 43,930 for the proposal. Supporters of the measure said the county or state cannot pay the $200 million needed for the 24-mile highway without making the extension a toll road.

Amendments to create landmark districts in Rosinton and Barnwell passed. The Rosinton amendment received 65,629 votes in favor and 22,263 against. The Belforest district passed by a similar margin, 67,048 to 21,937.

Amendment 1 to allow the Baldwin County probate judge to try equity court cases if he or she is a lawyer also passed by a vote of 64,702 to 23,545.
